"Medusa's Heritage"
Medusa's iconography and [assumed] characteristics has largely been popularized by the union of Greek mythology and Westernized commercialism. However, just as the fields of astronomy, science, medicine, mathematics, geometry, alchemy and agriculture emerged from the lands and culture of Ancient Kemet, Ancient Kush and Ancient Nubia, and later appropriated by Greco-Roman societies, Medusa's origins reflect this truth.
Medusa's origins predate Greco societies; In pre-colonial Ancient Africa, in Libya, Medusa was worshiped as a serpent-goddess that represented “female wisdom.” She was, and is, linked to divination, healing, magic and the sexual serpent mysteries linked with death and renewal. The Berber people in Ancient Libya venerated her as a part of their religion, worshipping the Triple Moon Goddess called Anatha. In Ancient/Pre-dynastic Kemet (Egypt), Medusa is closely represented by Ma’at, and is also associated with the destructive or death aspect of the Triple Moon Goddess known as Neith.
